Character
Description
Kitrina Cain, the Demigod of Prestige, lives in the Castle with her partner Valdoris Cain, the Demigod of Influence. They are both the adopted children of the god Sense & Self, gaining the demigods Savita and Elizaveta as adopted siblings. Their introduction into this pivotal Matching Season is seeking amongst the Unmatched mortals for the strongest potentials to sponsor.
A resilient fighter from Eldron who rose from nothing, her tactics and true heart caught the attention of the gods as well as her partner Valdoris during the Matching Season 21 years ago. Their efforts under the guidance of the matchmaker Orpheum sent them catapulting towards fame and winning Perfect Match, along with the rarest of all prizes: becoming Demigods.
When the events of this unprecedented season unfold, Kitrina’s focus on creating a future Perfect Match to elevate Eldron shifts towards helping not only the mortals she has sworn to protect, but also her fellow demigods in crisis. She yearns for the seeds she has sown over the past two decades to finally be brought to fruition, changing the face of the Matching Season and her world forever. In her mind it is no longer time to watch and wait, but to finally take action.
She is a muscular half-orc standing at 6’1”, with olive green skin and umber brown hair. A calculating glint can be seen in her piercing yellow-green eyes, if you’re quick enough to catch it. While her role as a fighter has become more about the tactics of society, she's still commonly seen with a halberd or axe at her side with copper inlaid on the haft. It is her way of reminding herself, and others, what she had to survive to arrive. She comes across as no-nonsense, eager to listen and connect others to those that may be mutually beneficial. She wishes to provide for those that are downtrodden, bringing respect and admiration for the deeds of others regardless of their station at birth.
Storylines
Background
Kitrina Pottle grew up on the streets of Eldron, an orphan without house or means. She learned quickly how to think fast and to hit hard, surviving on the streets and making her way in illegal fighting rings as a way to earn money. Finding she wanted a little more security with less putting her life on the line, she sought out a patron to put her into legal fighting rings. Her fame grew as Kitrina “Blackthorne”, the beautiful half-orc fighter who could outthink and outfight everyone she was put up against. From there she was approached with an offer to be a personal guard for an Eldron council member’s house and family, which she took with the hopes to be retired from her fighting life. Serving for the council member’s family she was able to attend a matching season to keep one of the children safe, observing the Castle and the politics of the event. The extravagance of the event and how the other nations lived bothered her, coming from a life of poverty.
When the second child of the council member’s family reluctantly attended their matching season, Kitrina had a plan to help pull attention away from them as well as win the favor of the gods for Eldron to receive the bountiful rewards. She would do anything and everything she could to win that matching season, putting herself forward as an Unmatched. Kitrina caught the attention of the demigod Orpheum, finding help and advice on how best to move about the Castle and “play the game.” Her eyes turned to the nobility of Cerul for a partner, as she sought to tie herself to the nation that won most seasons in the past.
Kitrina met and made a deal with Valdoris Petrichor, a tiefling who’s ability to charm and influence those around him made a perfect compliment to her own skills. As their matching season progressed, what started as a mutual understanding to succeed and win developed into something much stronger as they had to lean on each other for survival. Their love quickly became noticed by those attending the season… as did their determination and brutality to do all they could for each other to survive. As the final trial ended in devastation, Kitrina and Valdoris stood victorious- and unexpectedly were sent a blessing from the gods. The two of them were granted the powers and abilities of being demigods, gifted by the god of Sense and Self.
Now no longer mortal, they became Kitrina and Valdoris Cain, demigods who were to live and remain in The Castle rather than return to their mortal nations, cut off from the lives and world they’d known. Kitrina became the demigod of Prestige, with Valdoris’ purview being Influence. Their confidant and trainer, Orpheum, who had worked with them through their season, disappeared from the public eye, no longer around to help them learn how to survive in this new world. Inspired by how he had helped them, they decided to take up the mantle of sponsoring and training mortals of the matching season.
Their days were filled with the performance of moving through society as they attempted to understand it without offending, doing what they could to create relationships in this new world. Each Matching Season became a mix of being the past winners on parade, while finding new competitors to train and mentor. Always eager to support her nation of Eldron, Kitrina built a relationship with council members and politicians such as Kettlestone. She sought to sponsor as many from her nation over the past matching seasons, including helping Talmar Brasstack and Leopold Silversole in their first foray six years ago. The last matching season three years ago found Kitrina and Valdoris working together to sponsor and help Valvaris Mistmoor of Cerul.
Castleton Part 1
Kitrina and Valdoris wait in a carriage, observing those of the mortal realm arriving for the Matching Season. Kitrina finds herself thinking of them as participants of the “games.” She realizes that her distance from her mortal realm of Eldron and constant interactions in the demigod city have started to influence her perspective, thinking of the upcoming event as entertainment rather than the reality of peoples’ lives being on the line. She goes over the notes she’s read of this year’s participants, eager to reconnect with people of Eldron and to choose a pair to sponsor and train. She nervously taps her hands on the blade at her side- the head of a halberd without its staff. They are joined in the carriage by Savita, who helps to style their appearance for the opening grand ball.
At the opening ball, they are on an elevated platform where they are joined by fellow demigods. Usually this platform would be reserved for the previous season’s winners, but with the mysterious death of the wife and accusations floating around past winner Arialoth, those running the matching season have decided to showcase Kitrina and Valdoris as an example of a Perfect Match.
As the floor gives way at the ball, Kitrina turns to Valdoris. She asks for his mic stand, which she quickly attaches to her halberd blade. Promising to keep herself safe, she gives her love a kiss before jumping off of her platform to land amongst the Unmatched, doing all she can to help others to safety.
The next morning, Kitrina fumes over the nonchalant broadcast from Good Morning Castleton. They were both surprised to see their past sponsored participant, Valvaris Mistmoor who was presumed dead, jump into the fray and connect with the demigod Fallyn. They are shocked that Fallyn was made mortal, and take note of the two of them fleeing the ball.
Both of them are shocked over the violence of the opening ball, Kitrina insisting that whatever they’re waiting for and have been working towards needs to be enacted now. Their past trainer Orpheum was also seen at the ball, alive and well. A message is received from him, that states during his absence he’s been working on continuing what he began with us. He tells us to wait, and that he will send instructions on when to act.
Savita and Phimeus seek out Kitrina and Valdoris, sharing that Fallyn has been missing for a few days after the ball. They agree to help, creating plans to seek them out and sharing what information they have.
Representative Kettlestone of Eldron meets with Kitrina, inviting her and Valdoris to the Eldron ball.
At the Eldron ball, Kitrina and Valdoris are surprised with Fallyn and Valvaris arrive, announced as members of the Ironspade household and competitors in the Matching Season for Eldron. The announcement of the No Violence Decree from the gods stuns Kitrina- what will her purpose be now?
Castleton Part 2
Valdoris and Kitrina arrive at the Cloud Ball, standing with Igneus Petrichor, brother to Valdoris. They comment on how Rualma Mistmoor and Revel Petrichor are faring at the ball, proud that they’re not entirely being wallflowers. Valdoris is proud to be sponsoring and training the newly declared couple, finding a connection with his nephew Revel.
The three are joined by Fallyn and Valvaris, who boasts about doing what they can to win the Perfect Match themselves. Kitrina has become their sponsor and trainer. Valdoris insists that it doesn’t have to be entirely about winning, just surviving and making it through.
Through flashback, we see Kitrina and Valdoris speaking with Fallyn and Valvaris at the Eldron ball, trying to uncover where they’ve been and insisting that they go to Phimeus and share that they’re safe. They caution Fallyn, newly mortal, to be careful of how much mead she drinks as she celebrates.
The next morning, they arrive at Phimeus’ home with a very hungover Fallyn. Savita is present, which makes Kitrina curious if there’s some new relationship occurring between the two of them. Fallyn and Phimeus step aside to have a private conversation, but Kitrina keeps the door cracked open so that everyone can hear everything. The two siblings fight over their past actions and misunderstandings, with Fallyn and Valvaris leaving quickly. After saying their goodbyes, Valdoris and Kitrina leave Phimeus’ home along with them.
