Character

Description

Miles is 6'0", heavily built, with graying brown hair and build. His eyes, as well, are brown, and he holds himself with dignity and discipline, commanding whatever space he occupies. He dresses well, but usually simply, in fine clothes that resemble a military uniform, in the colors of Cerul and of his Duchy. He is rarely without his father's curved elven longsword at his side.

A lifelong loyal servant to the Crown of Cerul, he has a reputation for a mind as keen as his sword. Miles is a very competent warrior, diplomat, and ruler, dedicated to his Duchy and with a strong personal loyalty to his King and country. He is a swordsman of an older elven style, wielding the versatile curved longsword of the elven people with a brutal efficiency and power more than elven grace.

Storylines

Background

Sir Miles was born to an elven father and a human mother, who were a Perfect Match in their generation of the Matchmaking. His father, Sir Nimlos, was originally a minor noble, of the house of Whitham, knighted for his service to the Kingdom of Cerul. His mother, Lady Adriana, was a lady-in-waiting to a noble of Arma. When they made their perfect match, Sir Nimlos was granted the Duchy of Kingsbrook and of course Lady Adriana became his wife and Duchess. Although Cerul is very patriarchal, Nimlos quietly listened closely to his wife's advice, but often failed at proper execution of her instructions.

When Miles was a young man of 25, already a member of the King's Guard himself, his father was killed on the training field by the King of Cerul at the time. It may have been a show of strength, or as an example to others, considering how Sir Nimlos was managing the affairs of his Duchy. Shortly thereafter, his mother died, apparently of grief, and Miles ascended to rulership of the Duchy. Miles kept his father's original name in addition to that of Kingsbrook, and he had to work three times as hard after that: to avoid suspicion of disloyalty after the King killed his father, to prove himself a great warrior and officer, and to rebuild Kingsbrook. His father, while a great warrior, was a very poor administrator, and the Duchy was in shambles when Miles inherited.

He managed to prove himself, and rose through the ranks, eventually being assigned as guard and mentor to the young Crown Prince. Around 30 years ago, Miles accompanied the Crown Prince (now King) of Cerul to the Matching, as part of his guard. The Crown Prince made a Perfect Match that year, and Miles made quite a good match of his own, with the Lady Isilme, elven daughter of the Marquis of Mistmoor. That is also when Miles met and befriended she who would become Lady Quake Tidal.

Since then, he has been ever closer to the King and his family, who grew up with him almost as an uncle, and definitely as a mentor and advisor. For many years, Miles and his Duchy prospered, until his wife died, of an unexpected illness. Miles had expected Isilme to outlive him, and any children to inherit both the Duchy and their mother's longevity. He was crushed, and has been in deep mourning since that time. He has pressed no suit, nor tried to remarry, though he has had occasional affairs, purely physical from his perspective. Now, he is being pressured by the King and the Court into making a match so that he can carry on his family line and keep his place on the Council, and possibly even his Duchy. He suspects foul play in the death of his wife, and seeks to learn the identity of the perpetrators so that he may have his revenge.

Castleton Part 1

Miles tries to navigate the morass of politics while ensuring his daughter's future and trying to make Cerul, at least, a better place. He meets an old friend, Lady Quake Tidal, and they rekindle ancient flames, and declare a match. Meanwhile, he strives to keep his Princes from starting wars with demigods.

Castleton Part 2

Now, he must try to dance through the razor wire and keep his family safe while avoiding the anger of his King and the ever present specter of war. Oh, and love.
